"CAST IN BRONZE"
If you've been to the Remsen Barn Festival you've almost certainly heard about "The Bell Man", Frank DellaPenna. For four years now Remsen has been exposed to the rare and beautiful sounds of the Carillon. This 4 ton musical instrument is as rare as it is beautiful. When asked why he comes to our "little town", DellaPenna states, "I love this place and the people here are just wonderful." That feeling is mutual, judging by the crowds who stop shopping to listen to his music and the chatter about the "mysterious man who plays the bells" heard throughout the festival. I had the opportunity to talk with DellaPenna this year and I will admit I was a bit nervous at first. Not because of the mysterious costume but because I am a big fan of his and growing up in such a tiny community, it's not all that often we get to meet such a dynamic artist. Upon speaking with DellaPenna I was immediately put to ease by his gentle demeanor and willingness to share his time and thoughts with me. I asked him why he plays the Carillon in costume, "Carillons were typically kept in towers. One could hear the beautiful sounds but without seeing who was playing it. I wanted to keep that mystery alive." said DellaPenna. I am certain that anyone who has seen one of his shows will agree, the mystery is as alive as the music is beautiful.
